The digital SAT for Italian universities: Bocconi, Politecnico di Milano and when it beats the university's own test

The digital SAT for Italian universities: structure (98 questions, 134 minutes), 400-1600 scoring, Bocconi and Polimi thresholds, when to choose it.

If you are aiming at Bocconi or the Politecnico di Milano and already have a SAT, or are thinking of taking one, the question is practical: does it count as an admission test, with which thresholds, and is it really better than the university’s own test? This guide lines up what the College Board and the two universities say officially, and marks as not verified whatever we could not read.

Everything below was read on 29 October 2026, on the official pages named in the note at the top.

What the digital SAT is

The SAT is the College Board’s standardised test, used for admission to American universities and accepted by several European ones as well. The digital version has two sections:

SectionQuestionsMinutesModules
Reading and Writing54642 of 32 minutes
Math44702 of 35 minutes
Total9813410-minute break between the sections

Almost all questions are multiple choice; in maths some are student-produced responses that you type in. Some questions are «pretest» items used to calibrate future tests: they do not count towards your score, but you cannot tell which ones they are, so you give every question the same effort.

Adaptive by module

The test is adaptive by module. The first module of each section has mixed difficulty; depending on how you do, the second module is easier or harder. Three practical consequences:

  1. The first module weighs more than it looks, because it decides which band of questions you reach: do not give away careless errors there.
  2. It is not the same test for everyone: two students with the same number of correct answers can get different scores, having solved questions of different difficulty.
  3. Time is managed module by module (32 and 35 minutes), not across the whole section. The rules for moving between questions are on the College Board’s page; we have not verified them here.

Content: four domains per section

Reading and Writing uses short passages, 25 to 150 words, each with a single question. The four domains are:

  • Information and Ideas: understanding what the text says and using evidence to support a claim;
  • Craft and Structure: word meaning in context, structure and purpose of a passage;
  • Expression of Ideas: logical transitions and effective writing choices;
  • Standard English Conventions: grammar, punctuation, agreement.

Math also has four domains: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, Geometry and Trigonometry. For a student coming from an Italian liceo the syllabus is mostly familiar; the difficulty is not the level but the format: short questions, in English, under time pressure (about 1.6 minutes per question in maths and 1.2 in reading and writing).

Scoring: 400-1600, no penalty per question

The score is on a 200-800 scale per section, and the total runs from 400 to 1600 (the sum of the two sections). Two details change how you think:

  • There is no penalty for each wrong answer. This reverses the strategy of Italian tests with negative marking: at the SAT you never leave a question blank.
  • The score is not a plain sum. The College Board computes it with Item Response Theory, which considers question difficulty and the probability that an answer pattern indicates random guessing. With the same number of correct answers you can get different scores, and every score is reported with a range (standard error).

The exact conversion from correct answers to score is not public: there is no «so many right answers equals so many points» table on which to build a threshold.

How Italian universities accept it

This is where confusion is easy, because every university decides for itself. Here is what the official sources we read say.

Bocconi (academic year 2027/28)

Bocconi accepts SAT and ACT for every degree programme as an alternative to the online test (Bocconi’s page reserves the Law test and the LSAT for the law programmes; whether the SAT is enough for those is not detailed in the text we read, so it is not verified: see our guide to the Law test). The requirements:

  • SAT minimum of 1,040 points overall and 520 in each section;
  • SAT not older than 2022;
  • Bocconi code for sending scores: 7206;
  • for the artificial intelligence programme, a Math score of at least 600 is also required;
  • the score must be sent by the deadline of the round you apply in.

Bocconi converts the SAT internally with percentile tables that are not public: we cannot tell how a 1,200 compares with a result on the standard test.

Politecnico di Milano

For Engineering degrees the SAT is one of the alternatives to the TOL (the others are the TOLC-I and, for degrees in English, the CEnT-S). The Polimi code is 7364, and the sum of Reading and Writing and Math counts. The rules depend on the phase:

  • 2026/27 early phase: at least 620 points per section, with tests taken from 1 January 2025 to 4 May 2026 and online registration by 4 June 2026;
  • 2026/27 later phases: the score is converted to a score out of 100 and you need at least 30/100, with exemption from the English OFA;
  • 2027/28, degrees taught in Italian: the SAT counts only in the early phase, with at least 75/100 after conversion and a test taken between 1 September 2025 and 31 August 2026; the deadline for TOL alternatives is 3 June 2027.

The conversion formula to 100 is not published (the page says the converter will be made available), and Polimi announces new information for January 2027. The 2027 SAT page also contains a sentence that seems to contradict the deadline for alternatives: we read it as a probable editing error, but it is not verified, so check the official text before deciding. For the structure of the TOL and its weights see our article on the TOL.

Sapienza and the others

At Sapienza, for the Global Humanities and Classics programmes, the SAT exempts you from the English HUM test: that is something different from admission. For other Italian universities we have not read an official source: do not assume the SAT counts as an entry test. The rule is always the same: the answer is in the call for the programme and year you are interested in.

When the SAT makes sense and when it does not

There is no universal answer. Here is how I reason with students.

Worth considering if:

  • you are aiming at Bocconi or Polimi and have confirmed your programme accepts the SAT;
  • your English is already solid (a full B2) and maths and reading are your strengths;
  • the validity over time suits you: a result can serve for more than one round, within the test-date windows above;
  • you also want to keep open universities abroad asking for the same test, so one preparation works toward several goals.

The university’s own test is better if:

  • your programme accepts it but the thresholds are high compared with your English level: at the SAT everything is in English, and the language weighs on both sections;
  • you want a ranking based on the university’s own test rather than on a conversion of a scale the university does not publish in full;
  • you have no time for two preparations: the TOLC-I, the TOL and the Bocconi test differ in content and format from the SAT, and switching is not free.

A good way to decide is to simulate both routes in the same weekend: if you stay comfortably above the SAT thresholds and the university test scares you, the choice is made; if you do better with the Italian format, the SAT is an unnecessary risk.

How to prepare, section by section

Reading and Writing. This is where Italian students lose most points, often not through comprehension but through time: 54 questions in 64 minutes means reading and deciding in just over a minute. An exercise that works is to train by domain: one hour only on grammar conventions (where a few rules cover a great many questions: subject-verb agreement, tenses, pronouns, punctuation), then an hour on logical transitions.

An original example of a «conventions» question: «The collection of rare manuscripts, which includes letters written in three centuries, ___ now available to researchers.» The trap is to agree the verb with «centuries» or «manuscripts» when the subject is collection: the answer needs a singular verb. Learning to mentally cross out the clause between two commas solves half of this kind of question.

Math. The syllabus is that of the liceo, but the questions reward reasoning about structure rather than long calculation. An original example: «If and , what is ?» Substitute to get:

No advanced formulas: you need to substitute without sign errors, every time, in under a minute. For the basics of mental arithmetic and algebra see the maths page.

Student-produced response questions have no options to eliminate: if you get the form wrong (for example writing a fraction when a decimal is required), there is no safety net. Get used to checking the required format.

Time. With about 1.2 minutes per question in reading and writing and 1.6 in maths, the rule is do not stay glued to one question: flag it and move on, and before closing the module recheck the flagged ones. Remember that having no penalty makes it worth answering everything, even at random in the last minute.

Three mistakes to avoid

  1. Assuming the SAT counts everywhere. For Italian degrees we have read official sources only for Bocconi, Polimi and (for one specific case) Sapienza. For the others: check the call.
  2. Forgetting validity. Bocconi does not accept SATs before 2022; Polimi has precise test-date windows for each phase. A great score obtained outside the window does not count.
  3. Fixating on the conversion. Neither Bocconi nor Polimi publishes the full conversion: plan with the declared thresholds (1,040/520 for Bocconi; 620 per section in the Polimi early phase) and with a safety margin, not with a formula you imagine.

What we do not know yet

On 29 October 2026 the following is not published or not verified: the formula Polimi uses to convert the SAT to a score out of 100; Polimi’s new information for 2027/28 (announced for January 2027); any Bocconi thresholds for years after 2027/28; whether other Italian universities accept the SAT; the contradictory sentence about the deadline for alternatives on the Polimi 2027 page. We update this guide and the «Verified on…» note at the top when the sources change; the university tests calendar has the other deadlines.

How we work in lessons

We do not have a SAT practice test of our own (yet): module-level adaptivity and student-produced responses cannot be simulated faithfully in a multiple-choice test, and we do not want to hand you a reconstruction passed off as the real thing. What we do in lessons is work on format and timing with original questions: timed modules of 32 and 35 minutes, question-by-question correction, and a plan worked backwards from the deadline of the university you are aiming at. If you are still choosing between the SAT and Bocconi’s online test, start with the comparison of tests for Economics and the guide to preparing for the Bocconi test, with the Bocconi practice test to measure where you stand.

If you do not know where to begin, the free introductory call is for exactly that: in half an hour we look at your starting point, the university you are aiming at and whether the SAT or the university’s own test suits you better. The general picture is on the admission tests page, and for English there is the English page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the SAT really replace the admission test at Bocconi or the Politecnico?

At Bocconi, yes: for 2027/28 the SAT is accepted for every programme as an alternative to the online test, with a minimum of 1,040 points overall and 520 per section. At the Politecnico di Milano it is one of the alternatives to the TOL (with the TOLC-I and the CEnT-S), with different rules by admission phase. For other Italian universities we have not read an official source, so do not take it for granted.

Does the SAT penalise wrong answers?

No: the College Board does not deduct points question by question. The score is however computed with Item Response Theory, which takes into account the difficulty of the questions and the probability that a pattern of answers indicates random guessing. In practice the consequence is simple: never leave a question blank.

How long does a SAT result stay valid for Bocconi or Polimi?

For Bocconi 2027/28 the SAT cannot be older than 2022. For Polimi the 2026/27 early phase accepted tests from 1 January 2025 to 4 May 2026, and for 2027/28 tests from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2026. Those are the windows of the stated cycle: re-read the call for the year you are aiming at.

How does Polimi convert the SAT to a score out of 100?

We do not know: on the page we read, the converter is announced as forthcoming and the formula is not published. We only know the thresholds (620 per section in the 2026/27 early phase; 30/100 converted in later phases; 75/100 for degrees taught in Italian in the 2027/28 early phase). Do not rebuild a conversion by eye.

The SAT is adaptive: what does that mean in practice?

Each section is split into two modules. The second module is easier or harder depending on how the first one went. A strong first module gives access to the harder questions, which are the ones that lead to the highest scores.
