About me

I'm Gaetano. I'm an aerospace engineer, and I teach what I use at work every day.

I develop control systems for satellites in orbit. And I've been explaining maths and physics since I was in high school.

Gaetano Livornese, aerospace engineer and tutor

I studied Aerospace Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano. For some years now I have been head of the GNC department — guidance, navigation and control — on satellite platforms: I work both on low-Earth-orbit constellations and on deep-space missions — interplanetary probes, the Moon, asteroids. In practice, together with my team, I write the software that lets a platform know where it is, where it is going and how to correct itself when something goes wrong.

I also host a podcast, Attitude Control, where I talk about the most interesting and amazing things in space and space engineering. The way I explain things there — starting from physical intuition, not from formulas — is the same way I teach in my lessons.

All of this matters for one reason only: it makes a difference in the lessons. I don't teach textbook maths. I teach the maths I use every day to solve real problems. When I explain an integral, I can tell you where it is really used. When we work on a controller, it's one I have just tuned at work.

Why it makes a difference

Not a full-time tutor: a working engineer who also teaches.

I really do what I teach

Every day I write code, debug and run numerical analyses for real missions. When I explain an integral or a control system it isn't textbook theory: it's what I use at work.

I teach at work too

At work I lead senior engineers and train interns and junior colleagues. The explanation techniques that work in a company are the same ones I bring to my lessons.

Clear communication is a priority

I host a podcast where I tell the most fascinating stories of space engineering. Explaining complex things simply is a skill you train every week.
