Two worked examples from the test

Question 1 · Cultura letteraria, storico-sociale e geografica · Letteratura

  • Aè scritta in versi anziché in prosa

Solution

Question 2 · Competenza linguistica e ragionamento logico · Comprensione del testo

Solution

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is the primary teaching degree test like?

Eighty multiple-choice questions with four options, to be completed in 150 minutes: 40 of language skills and logical reasoning, 20 of literary, historical-social and geographical culture, 20 of mathematical and scientific culture. The time is assigned to the whole test and not to the single areas, so you can spread it as you prefer — and the practice test does the same, with a single clock and free navigation between questions. Structure, content and scoring are set by the ministerial decree of the MUR (the Italian university ministry) for the current academic year, the same all over Italy.

Do wrong answers lose points?

No, and this is the most important difference from almost all the other admission tests. The decree gives 1 point for every correct answer and 0 points for both a wrong answer and a blank one: getting it wrong costs exactly as much as leaving it blank. The practical consequence is that you should never hand in a question unanswered, not even by guessing between two remaining options. If you have already prepared for a TOLC or the medicine test, where the penalty exists, it is a reflex to unlearn: the practice test applies the same scoring as the real test, so you notice it here and not on the day of the exam.

How many points do I need to get in?

The decree sets a national threshold: you enter the ranking if you score at least 55 points out of 80. Clearing it is not enough to get a place, though — the ranking is run by each university and places are limited, so the scores of the other candidates at your university count too. Only if the eligible candidates are fewer than the places available do the universities also go down to those who scored less than 55/80. The practice test shows the 55-point threshold next to your result, so you know straight away where you stand.

Does an English certificate add points?

Yes, a bonus for a recognised English-language certificate is added to the test score: 3 points for B1, 5 for B2, 7 for C1 and 10 for C2. Only the highest-level certificate counts, the scores do not add up. The practice test does not include it, because it depends on a qualification you either have or do not have and not on how the test goes: the number you see at the end is the test alone, out of 80.

Is the test the same all over Italy?

The framework is: number of questions, duration, split by area, scoring rules, threshold and even the day of the test are decided by the MUR and apply to every university. The actual questions, however, are prepared by each university, so there is no single national paper as for the TOLC and you will not find “last year’s official test” that is valid everywhere. That is also why training on the structure and on the content of the ministerial syllabus matters more than trying to guess the questions.

Where do the questions in this practice test come from?

We write them ourselves on the syllabus of the ministerial annex — text comprehension and reasoning, literary genres and authors of the Italian tradition, modern and contemporary history, geography, basic maths, earth and life sciences, physical sciences — and check them one by one. They are not questions copied from real tests. At the end you receive by email your score, the breakdown by area and by topic and the correct answer to every question, even the ones left blank; with an account you see them straight away on this page. The step-by-step explanation unlocks with your first lesson.
